Rekindling an Interest in Abstract Art

I have something exciting to share with you all for this week’s #FridayArtWithJ9!  I have recently (re)discovered abstract art!  It’s a style that I never really taken up … the last time that I created an abstract piece was back in high school in 2000 as an assignment for my art class.  Since then, I’ve always had a focused subject in my part, obviously in different styles.

Then all of a sudden, it’s like the Muses bitch slapped me last night and was like “HEY!  GO PAINT NOW!  RIGHT NOW!” and I NEEDED to paint abstractly.  Just play with colors, textures, techniques.  I was laying in my bed thinking about a technique I actually use in my spray paintings.  I basically lay down various colors in a certain sequence, and then “smear” them in a pattern, where all the colors come through in this really cool layered effect.  In spray paint, I usually do this with glossy paper or a bunched up plastic bag to get a textured effect.

And I thought it would be super cool to try it with other media, like acrylics, or even oils, which can retain texture.

So I think in a combination of an epiphany, curiosity, and sleep deprivation, I had a VERY successful painting session, where I experimented with these techniques and color combinations, and was super pleased with how the pieces turned out!

A new (maybe old?) interest has now sparked within me, and I’m dying to experiment even more, especially with a lot of blank canvases sitting around my Studio just waiting for paint.  My advice to you, as it tails my last blog entry, is to stay open-minded - you’ll never know what kind of interests will rekindle within you … run with it and let your creativity flow!

Enjoy creating!
